Apple seeds Panther build 7B59, 10.2.8

September 6, 2003 - Apple seeded build 7B59 of Mac OS X 10.3, Panther, as well as build 6R57 of OS X 10.2.8. The updates were posted to the Apple Developer Connection Web site Friday.

Panther build 7B59 has three known issues; installation to an external FireWire drive may hang or "take many hours," erase installations of a UFS volume may fail, and cross-filesystem reformat installations, such as UFS to HFS, are "problematic and not recommended" for this build. However, for previous Panther builds, Apple has recommended erase installations; with 7B59 testers can install Panther over Mac OS X 10.1 and 10.2 systems, Apple told developers.

Apple said build 7B59 of Xcode was not seeded due to some bugs that the company hopes to address by the next seed.

Apple also seeded build 6R57 of Mac OS X Update 10.2.8. In a seed note, the company explained the new Jaguar version numbering scheme: "The version number has changed, this was previously seeded as 10.2.7 build 6Rxx. Please also note that the OS version number for the Power Mac G5s is Mac OS X 10.2.7 build 6Sxx." (The G5s run a version of Jaguar with special hardware support, code-namedSmeagol.) When 10.2.8 is released, it will update installations of Version 10.2.6, Apple said in the seed note. 10.2.8's improvements and suggested testing areas mirror those we reported last week.

Monday, Apple seeded Panther build 7B53, saying that development was "fast approaching first candidate build." Tuesday, Apple seeded Panther Server build 7B52.
